At the end of October, the James A. Dever School participated in Red Ribbon Week. This is a national movement to raise awareness of the importance of being drug free. This year’s theme was “A Healthy Me is Drug Free.”
The week kicked off with the students and staff “Turning Their Backs on Drugs.” They showed their support by turning their shirts backwards to show they would not use drugs. Tuesday was a day to “Put a Cap on Drugs.” Students wore red bandanas, headbands, ribbons, hats, and hair clips on their heads. The students attended an assembly with Nassau County Police Officer, Rita Bopp-Carrol, who provided valuable information about the dangers of drugs. She spoke with students about harmful substances and the importance of making good decisions. Each class was given a giant red ribbon, which the students signed and proudly displayed outside their classrooms. The students also participated in “Uniting Together as a School.” Students and staff wore red shirts and paraded outside to the blacktop to show they will remain drug free. Each grade lined up behind a board with a letter on it spelling out the words “Drug Free.” Principal Darren Gruen carried the “D”, followed by kindergarten with the letter “R” and so forth. Once fully assembled, the students take out the bubbles they were given and blew bubbles in unison to show Dever’s unity against drugs. The final event for the week was “Sock it to Drugs.” The students and staff wore red socks and shoes on this day. What a great week. Thanks to all who participated and helped to plan all of these wonderful activities.
