Students at Wheeler Avenue School received a lesson in fire safety when volunteers from the Valley Stream Fire Department visited their school.
As part of the event, students learned about the importance of having working smoke detectors in their homes. They also learned how to call 911 and what information they should provide in the event of an emergency. The students were told to never touch matches, lighters or cigarettes and were reminded to follow directions during an emergency. In addition, they participated in a smoke house exercise, where they felt a hot door, dropped to their knees and crawled to a window to exit a smoke-filled room.
In addition to the fire department visit, several students participated in read alouds about fire fighters and fire prevention. They also completed a homework assignment with their parents to count the smoke detectors in their homes and to make sure they were working properly.
