Students who participated in the annual pajama night at Howell Road School were in for an extra special treat. In attendance, were over 90 students and their parents representing grades K-2. Every year the students are able to come to school at night dressed in their pajamas to listen to stories, enjoy cookies with milk, and make a craft.
This year was particularly special for all since two of the teachers were dressed as Little Red Riding Hood and Thumbelina. You can imagine the students’ amazement when they noticed the fairytale characters coming to life from the books that the teachers were reading. They have been reading and learning about fairytales, folktales and nursery rhymes in their classrooms as part of the common core curriculum. Another added treat was when the students visited the craft center they were able to make a stick puppet of either a fairytale or nursery rhyme character.
The students, as well as the parents, will continue to enjoy discussing the stories in their homes utilizing the questioning techniques that were modeled by the teachers who read the stories.
