Dear School Superintendent,
School is back in session, and as such, the youth of our County tend to
increase their unsupervised travel (walking to and from school, between
the bus stop and home, meeting with friends after school, etc.). As we
analyze crime reports, we historically see an increase in crimes
directed at students this time of year. Too often, our youth are
subjected to the theft of their cell phone, IPad, sneakers or other
articles they carry or wear.
Proactively anticipating this trend, the Nassau County Police Department
has prepared a simple but informative pamphlet entitled "Tips to keep
Safe". This simple pamphlet reminds students to stay vigilant and to be
aware of their surroundings. The pamphlet offers tips on how to avoid
becoming a victim and what to do in the event that they become one.
We are offering the attached pamphlet to you via our updated SPIN
"special interest group" in the hope that you will disseminate the
information to your students. Please feel free to email or print and
copy this pamphlet in order to provide it to your students.
Also be aware that we are directing our patrol officers to monitor
students as they walk to and from school and bus stops to show their
presence and to further deter would-be offenders.
Commissioner Krumpter and I hope you will assist us in this important
effort. We look forward to working with you throughout the school year
to protect your students, faculty and facilities.
Best Regards,
Steven Skrynecki
Chief of Department
NCPD
