Important Message from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Adrienne Robb-Fund
Earlier today, all schools in our district were placed on a modified lockout and students remained inside during recess due to police activity around our schools and nearby area. A woman reported allegedly seeing a man riding a bicycle past Wheeler Avenue School carrying a gun. The district and the woman immediately contacted the Nassau County Police Department Fourth Precinct who conducted an investigation by car, foot and by helicopter. Police officers were also sent to all of the schools.
At no time was the safety and security of our students and staff in jeopardy. By 1:30 p.m., the police indicated that their search had been completed and that normal school operations could resume. Dismissals will take place as usual. As a precaution, there will be additional police patrols in our area during this evening.
The man was described an Asian, mid 30’s, five foot ten inches tall, wearing a white T-shirt and black pants. He was also carrying a white plastic bag. Anyone with any information can contact the Fourth Precinct.
We are thankful to the woman, the grandmother of one of our students, for contacting the Wheeler Avenue principal and police. We are also grateful to the Nassau County Police Department for their quick response to the situation.
