There was excitement in the air as the sixth-grade students at Wheeler Avenue Elementary School eagerly awaited the start of their moving up ceremony at Valley Stream Central High School.
Families and invited guests proudly watched as the students, together for the last time as sixth graders, entered the ceremony. Members of the Board of Education including Dr. Frank Chiachiere, Dr. Sean Douglas, Patricia Farrell, Antoinette “Toni” Pomerantz and William P. Stris joined Superintendent of Schools Dr. Adrienne Robb-Fund, administrators and staff. On behalf of the Board of Education, Patricia Farrell congratulated the students on their success and encouraged them to always make the right choices as they move up to the junior high school.
Wheeler Avenue principal Dr. Gayle Steele spoke to the students about becoming leaders. “Now you are older and wiser. You've made friends and you are beginning to find yourself,” stated Dr. Steele. “You will need to make tough decisions and you will need to be a leader. Lead others down the right path. Make sure what you do makes you feel good inside.”
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Adrienne Robb-Fund spoke about the credits that appear at the end of a television show or movie and asked the students to think about who they should give credit to. “Think about your parents or guardians, your teachers and all the people who have helped you become who you are today,” said Dr. Robb-Fund. “These are the people who deserve the credit for helping you in life.”
During the ceremony, a student representative from each sixth-grade class shared memories of their time at Wheeler Avenue Elementary School. The Class of 2015 also showcased their musical talents by presenting a choreographed rendition of Imagine Dragon’s “On Top of the World.” Their performance was met with a standing ovation.
Following the presentation of the certificates, the students joined their parents and friends to celebrate.
