Dressed in their new class trip T-shirts provided by the PTA, third-grade students at Willow Road School were all set for their trip to Safety Town. Located at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, the Safety Town program was designed in 1964 as an interactive way to teach and promote early childhood safety education. This miniature town, built to one-third scale, includes traffic signals, paved streets, buildings and simulated railroad crossings. Following a discussion and demonstration on traffic and bicycle safety by the Nassau County Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit, the students were ready to tour Safety Town. They walked, rode bicycles and drove vehicles practicing the safety precautions and procedures they were taught. The most important lesson they learned was "eyes before feet.”
