As part of Red Ribbon Week activities focusing on kindness and acceptance, Wheeler Avenue Elementary School students welcomed guest performers who presented a series of skits called “The Power of One.” Actors Ben and Brianne led an impactful and engaging assembly, providing valuable lessons on anti-bullying.
Ben and Brianne first discussed the definition of bullying as a purposeful and hurtful behavior. Both performers shared that they were bullied when they were younger and that it was a very upsetting experience. They noted that there are several forms of bullying including physical and verbal and that there are various roles involved in a bullying situation.
The presenters reviewed the individuals that are at play: the bully and the target were clear, but many students were unaware that bystanders also have a role. Ben and Brianne acted out a number of skits, in which they took turns portraying the bully and target. They then invited students from the audience to join them on stage and act out a number of scenes including bystanders as well. Those on stage as well as in the audience learned what they should do when faced with a bullying situation.
The students gained a strong sense of how bullying impacts all people involved, and how they can refrain from and help prevent these behaviors. They were taught to always “tell your teacher” if they find themselves experiencing or witnessing a bullying incident. The assembly was just one component of Red Ribbon Week. Thanks to a donation from the school’s PTA, the outside of the building featured a banner, which the students tied red ribbons around, stating, “Wheeler Avenue School wants you to be a Buddy not a Bully.” Students also took a pledge to stand up against bullying.
