Students at Wheeler Avenue School selflessly embraced novel ideas to spread cheer, warmth and help to those that need it most this holiday season.
When fourth-graders in Diane Gorman’s and in Erin Maywald’s classes were made aware that many servicemen and women who return home from deployment are typically not greeted at the airport by their family and friends they combined their efforts to create patch quilts featuring student sentiments both written and drawn. Students created patch panels that expressed gratitude and warm holiday wishes to the returning troops. The veteran support group “Operation Welcome Home Maryland” assigned the donated quilts to an airport gate for display.
Fifth-graders in Lisa Smaldon‘s new “Do Something” club raised money for people in the Philippines affected by typhoon Haiyan to help salvage the spirit of the holiday season there. The club members made bracelets that they sold to raise approximately $350 dollars. Back in November, the club also sponsored a food drive and collected cans of food items which were donated to a local food pantry for needy families in the Valley Stream community.
