In celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Willow Road fifth-grade students created 'MLK's Artful Words' which is presently being displayed in the main lobby. For this project, students in Mrs. Geidel's art class studied Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Six Principles and Steps of Nonviolence. They also studied the art works of artists Robert Indiana and Wassily Kandinsky and color theory. After brainstorming words that they felt best reflected the life and legacy of Dr. King, the students used recycled cardboard as miniature canvases to depict these words inspired by his teachings and the art of these two popular artists. In Ms. Shaw's kindergarten class, the children also focused their studies on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. They understand why the word equality is important to all people and were very impressed to learn that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had won the Nobel Peace Prize. They realize the most important thing to remember is "Love is a colorful word".
