Students at James A. Dever Elementary School endeavored to raise awareness about the dangers of drugs and the importance of being drug-free as they took part in Red Ribbon Week, a national initiative that educates and encourages students to not use drugs. The theme for this year’s event was “Respect Yourself, Be Drug-Free.”
To kick off the week, students and staff wore the Dever colors to signify their unification as a drug-free school. Among the daily themes were Stop and Smell the Roses, Don’t Do Drugs Day, for which students presented their teachers with red flowers or drew red flowers on paper; Team Up Against Drugs Day, which called for students and staff to wear sports shirts and jerseys; and We Take a Stand Against Drugs Day, when students and staff wore red shirts and paraded outside to show that they will remain drug-free. Select students carried signs that spelled out “RESPECT,” while others held signs that read “Respect Yourself” and “Be Drug-Free.” The classes then marched to form a rainbow.
Participation in this annual event unites both students and teachers and raises awareness to the importance of remaining drug-free.
