Planting a tree is the perfect way to celebrate Arbor Day. The entire Howell Road School commemorated this day by adding a Norway Spruce to their Reading Garden and four others to the Howell schoolyard. Students and staff also added to the beautiful perennials in the garden by planting several astilbe plants. The Norway Spruce trees were donated by the Village of Valley Stream and will add a continual splash of green to the school’s landscape. The Howell Road PTA donated the astilbe perennial plants, which will return each year bringing life and color to the Reading Garden. The Arbor Day outdoor assembly included the Howell Road color guard (Student Council Representatives-Selina Barnes and Paul Parra) and Michael Filippi who lead all in attendance in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Howell Road principal Mr. Frank Huplosky emphasized the importance of Arbor Day and how it is everyone’s responsibility to take care of the earth. Fifth-grade student, Joedell Bastien read a poem entitled, “Like the Trees.” This was followed by the third-grade students singing, “Love Can Make Our Garden Grow,” a song which music teacher Mr. Michael Rodgers and several students had written together. The beautiful celebration ended with all of Howell Road singing the “Garden Song” together. Children singing songs, reciting poetry, and planting in Howell’s Reading Garden, paired with a delightfully sunshine-filled morning proved to be a wonderful way to commemorate Arbor Day.
