The Friends of the Malverne Public Library hosted an art reception for the James A Dever students and their parents at the Malverne Public Library. Many of the students in grades one through three had the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents by having their masterpieces displayed at the library art exhibit. The inspiration for their artwork was the book, Camille and the Sunflowers, by Laurence Anholt. The story taught the students about Vincent Van Gogh, his life and his works. After reading the book aloud to the students, Dever art teacher Mrs. Fran Sullivan set up a still life of sunflowers in a vase in the art room. Students used this as a reference as they created their craypas drawings. Many of the students and their families, as well as members of the Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen Board of Education Dr. Frank Chiachiere and Toni Pomerantz, came to the library and were greeted by Maryann Ferro, Director of the Malverne Library, Brian Callaghan, President of the Friends of the Malverne Library, Darren Gruen, Principal of James A. Dever, and other members of the Board of Friends of the Malverne Library. Mr. Gruen, Mrs. Sullivan and Mrs. Rita Chiachiere, Friends board member, distributed certificates of recognition to the students. What a wonderful opportunity for collaboration between the James A. Dever students and the community. Thank you to the Malvern Library and Friends for their hard work and their hospitality.
