From January 20 through February 8, Willow Road School's Student Council continued their tradition of collecting soup to support local food pantries in the community. More than twenty boxes of canned soups and Ramen soup packages were collected and donated to the INN of Hempstead. This is an annual event held to help the local food pantries re-stock their shelves with soup during the cold weather months. Tied into the national football frenzy, nicknamed, the "Souper Bowl", classes are challenged to bring in the most soup per student, and to calculate the ratio of soup to student in each class. A dynamic math lesson is incorporated into a character-building event devoted to charity and helping fellow neighbors. Willow Road's principal, Ms. Stephanie Capozzoli proudly awarded this year's 2016 Souper Bowl trophy and poster to Mrs. Deanna Cappello's fifth-grade class. Club co-facilitators, Ms. CaroleAnne Weik and Mrs. Nancy Sferrazza assisted student council officers and representatives in organizing, collecting and packaging the food items for delivery. Willow Road School is honored to have had the opportunity to provide local families with hot soup during this chilly season.
