Feeding the Hungry and Exploring Math

This year, the Willow Road Student Council coordinated another community service activity and collected more than 900 cans of soup that were then donated to a local food pantry. Over the course of several weeks, the service project, called the Souper Bowl, challenged students to bring in donated cans and boxes of instant soup. Each day the students counted and tallied the donations and then graphed the daily totals. This not only helped community residents in need, but it was also an interesting way to explore math concepts in the real world as part of the district’s Common Core Learning Standards curriculum. It was also an innovative way to teach ratios and proportions, as the winning class had to win by the most cans of soup per student. The INN of Hempstead gratefully received the soup, which totaled nearly 500 pounds. While everyone was a winner, Mrs. Tringone’s kindergarten class was awarded the coveted Souper bowl trophy for collecting the most cans of soup.
