As part of “Read Across America Day,” students in kindergarten, first and second grade at the James A. Dever Elementary School celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 1. The halls were filled with Dr. Seuss quotes and rhymes, and the children created hats and bowties and wore red, white and black to dress as the Cat in the Hat for the day. Teachers Michele Discala and Eileen Wallace also dressed as the Cat in the Hat and read books to some of the classes, while first grade teacher Debora O’Connor dressed as Thing 2 to show her love of Dr. Seuss’ books. The teachers on these grade levels switched classes and read books such as “Yertle the Turtle,” “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” and “Horton Hatches the Egg.” Teachers Maria Francaviglia and Michelle Johnson combined their classes for the reading of “Green Eggs and Ham.” The students then worked together to write a reading response about foods they do not like to eat. Alyssa Ventura and Joan Seidl played “Pin the Green Egg on the Plate,” as well as some other activities. Librarian Roxanne MacDonald and the school’s speech therapists supported the day with activities as well. Everyone had a great time celebrating Dr. Seuss and his literature by being a part of “Read Across America Day.”
