Parents district wide were offered the opportunity to attend a workshop relating to the Northwest Evaluation Association student assessment exams and the best ways for parents to interpret test results. The workshop was conducted twice, with a daytime session at Willow Road Elementary School and an evening session at James A. Dever Elementary School, to make it more convenient for all parents to attend. The workshop was designed to appeal to kindergarten parents, new parents to the district, and those parents who wanted to be refreshed or had questions. There are approximately 300 kindergartners in the district. Coordinator of Curriculum and Assessment Caroline Schozer presented a slideshow that explained the NWEA exam process and demonstrated how the tests are adaptive to the individual student. “These tests really give the teacher a great idea of where your child is academically,” said Schozer. Short video clips served as examples of the types of questions students might have seen when they were tested during the second week of school in September. Superintendent Dr. Adrienne Robb-Fund was on hand to further explain to parents how the adaptive testing helps educators better measure individual academic progress and how this benefits all students in their school careers. “We really believe it takes a whole village,” said Robb-Fund in her welcoming remarks to parents. “It takes you as our families and us as your teaching community, and together is how we teach them well.” Schozer and Robb-Fund answered questions during and after the presentations. NWEA is a nonprofit organization that offers a range of educational assessments aligned with the Common Core Learning Standards.
