Students in grades K-2 at the James A. Dever School celebrated National Fire Safety month by having a visit from the Malverne and Valley Stream Fire Departments. The Valley Stream Fire Department came with a modular smoke house to teach the children what to do in a fire through simulated fire situations. The children were very excited when the smoke detectors sounded and fake smoke filled the house. Under the careful guidance of the firemen, the students then proceeded to safely evacuate the house by climbing out of a window. A local firefighter and classroom teacher supervised all of the safety instruction events. The children also had the opportunity to explore the outside of a fire truck, learn about turnout gear, and what a pumper truck does. The children learned many valuable life saving fire tips to remember and share with family members.
