Sixth-grade students at James A. Dever Elementary School celebrated a milestone in their academic careers during a moving-up ceremony that was both emotional and memorable at the Elmont Memorial Library. Board of Education Trustees Debra Evans and William P. Stris, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Adrienne Robb-Fund, Assistant Superintendent for Business Meredith Brosnan, staff, family members and invited guests filled the Elmont Memorial Library to congratulate the students on their accomplishments.
The evening began with a photo presentation featuring each student’s baby photos and photos taken throughout the past year, followed by words of wisdom, praise and advice from Dr. Robb-Fund, Ms. Evans and Ms. Brosnan.“As you move on to seventh grade, remember the most important thing about you is you,” said Dr. Robb-Fund. “Everyone is celebrating you today and who you are. We look forward to seeing you again in the future and hearing about all of your accomplishments to come.”“The best way to predict your future is to create it,” Ms. Evans advised the students. “Become a lifelong learner. Learning never ends, and there are many ways in which you can learn.”“We are so proud of all you have achieved – you have grown emotionally, socially and academically since you started kindergarten,” said Ms. Brosnan. “Today is an ending, but it is also a new beginning. Congratulations on all you have accomplished.”
Following these words of encouragement, the sixth-graders walked across the stage one by one to receive their certificates signifying their completion of elementary school. James A. Dever Principal Darren Gruen congratulated the students. “Upon reflection, I can remember your first days in kindergarten,” he said. “This is the end of a wonderful journey and the beginning of a new journey that will lead you to great success. From today forward, challenges will come by leaps and bounds, but you are all prepared to face them with confidence.” He then thanked everyone who made the moving-up ceremony a reality.
Following the traditional singing of the James A. Dever school song, the students were treated to a special celebration in their honor, where they gathered to enjoy refreshments and pose for photos that would add to their fond memories of the special occasion.
