There was an excitement in the air at the Elmont Memorial Library as family members and invited guests awaited the start of the Willow Road Elementary School moving-up ceremony. Sixth-grade students proudly walked down the aisle as family members and invited guests looked on.
The program began with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the singing of the national anthem. Board of Education trustee Dr. Frank Chiachiere spoke about the important role technology will play in the students’ future. “The speed at which technology is changing is the driving force of the future of our students,” he said. “It is our responsibility, working together, to make sure our students are prepared to succeed in their future careers. I am honored to be here and to serve you and your children.” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Adrienne Robb-Fund congratulated the students on all they had achieved. “Tonight is all about you, and we celebrate you and all you have achieved,” she said. “You are all familiar with the routines you had in your early childhood. Now is the time to create new routines that will help you succeed in achieving your academic goals.” Principal Stephanie Capozzoli also addressed the students. “You have completed the first part of a journey that will take a lifetime to complete,” she said. “Build upon the foundations given to you at Willow. You are the carriers of the light, so go forward and illuminate the world.”
Taking a moment to look back in time, the students performed a moving selection of the same songs they sang seven years ago during their kindergarten moving-up ceremony. Their voices were stronger and the confidence they had developed over the years was evident. Next came the moment everyone was waiting for. One by one, the students were called to walk across the stage and receive their certificates.
The ceremony concluded with the students proceeding down the aisle to a loud round of applause from their proud family members and guests.
