Continuing their learning into the summer months, more than 500 students have been participating in the district’s annual summer activities at Howell Road School. The activities, which include a recreation program, hockey and music lessons, and an English language arts and mathematics-focused SCOPE program, enable students to explore new areas of interest, enhance their current knowledge, socialize with peers and supplement their regular classroom learning in a fun, engaging and productive environment under the watchful direction of teachers, counselors and volunteers.
The main summer recreation program provides indoor and outdoor hands-on activities and constructive play for students entering kindergarten through sixth grade. Students develop grade-level readiness as they explore age-appropriate skills and a daily literacy component realized through story time, poetry, chants and songs. Field trips to the bowling alley, roller skating rink and movie theater are also part of the program. The DJ family party – a time for parents to see various performances and work completed – serves as the culminating event for the summer. Additionally, lessons and clinics in game time sports, hockey and music are offered, with music lessons running in partnership with the Valley Stream Central High School District.
Further emphasizing the Common Core Learning Standards, the ELA and mathematics SCOPE-run program reviews writing and math core components in a project-based learning environment that is exciting and fun for all students involved. Students are instructed through problem-solving games and other similar lessons, with an emphasis on cooperative learning and constructivism. These ELA and math lessons are different from lessons taught throughout the regular academic year, enriching student learning on a new level by providing new thought processes and strategies for success.
Many students take part in multiple activities throughout the summer, ensuring they are continually engaged and learning – and better preparing them for the new school year in September.
